The Five Elements of Moxibustion

It is stated in "Lingshu Senses", a chapter in ancient Esoteric Scripture of the Yellow Emperor - "Moxibustion is to be applied to ailments where acupuncture fails to treat”. 

It can be seen that moxibustion can complement acupuncture, instead of being a replacement. Moxibustion is one of the predominant methods of disease prevention and health care in ancient China.

In traditional Chinese medicine, Ai Cao or Mugwort leaves possess the ability to stop bleeding, dispel cold and relieve pain, regulate menstruation, reduce “wind-dampness” and relieve itching. It can be made into tablets, incense or block forms with other products for  medicinal and therapeutic purposes. Traditional Chinese medicine combines mugwort leaves with various Chinese herbs such as cinnamon, bark of the Eleutherococcus, Costus roots, Astragalus root, Ginseng,  Oriental Motherwort and Angelica to bring about balance in bodily well-being.

1. Wood 

It has been used for many centuries to treat conditions such as fatty livers, cervical spondylosis, lumbar muscle strains, and stiff necks

2. Fire 

Used regularly for maintenance of healthy bodily functions

3. Earth

The treatment is effective for gastrointestinal disorders, indigestion, abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, obesity, and other stomach and spleen disorders.

4. Metal 

Helps improve upper respiratory health and immunity. Treatment also improves symptoms of flu, cough, breathlessness, hives and eczema.

5. Water

Moxibustion is especially good for gynecology and andrology. It is excellent in treating menstruation, impotence, dysmenorrhea, abnormal leucorrhea, prostate problems, as well as low back pain, cold hands and feet. We blow air conditioners more often than ever, and the yang qi in our bodies is insufficient. Result of Moxibustion is optimised when applied in consideration of local temperate conditions.
